About Cake Camp
Contributed by Fay Shanholtzer
It’s hard to believe how the California Cake Club has grown and what has been accomplished since the beginning in 1980, at Anaheim. Frances Kuyper (The Cake Lady), the Founder, held the first meeting in Anaheim with approximately 40 attending. Jeanne Lutz was appointed President for two years.
In 1982-84 under the presidency of Fay Shanholtzer, California Cake Club received the status of a Non Profit Corporation. For the October 8, 1983 meeting in Bakersfield, we had the first mini demos, which developed into the first Mini Classes on July 14-17, 1989 at Bakersfield College, during the Presidency of Vada Millar.
In July of 1989 it was presented with the idea for the California Cake Club to sponsor Mini Classes with traveling teachers. Many members had been asking for this to happen. After many meetings and telephone calls, Vada stepped up to spearhead the project with help from Lorine Eckardt. The dates of July 14-17, 1989 were set for the very first Mini Classes, to be held at the Bakersfield College. There were 17 teachers and 53 classes scheduled. All classes were well attended with students coming from all over California and other states. In Feb 1991, the Board announced that an agreement was formed between 3C’s and Country Kitchen, in Illinois, to offer mini classes on alternating years. Hence, they held mini classes in 1991, and we continued in 1992, holding the event biennially.
The California Cake Club members are pleased to have so many countries support our Cake Camps. We realize how important it is to have all this knowledge available to everyone.
Below is the history that has led us to our 14th Cake Camp.
